DAT | Mobile App Design

DAT is the industry leader and largest truckload freight marketplace in North America. They tasked us with merging their three existing applications into one unified platform–connecting carriers, brokers, 3PLs, and shippers to loads, with solutions to support the entire freight journey and the tools to plan for the road ahead.

Role: UX/UI Designer

Our process began by consolidating and remapping the current architecture of their three separate applications. Historically, these apps served different audiences, some with overlapping functionality, resulting in a confusing and disconnected experience. Through discovery and workshops, we created an architecture that seamlessly blended the three apps' functionality into one application, allowing each target audience an easy-to-navigate pathway.

We adopted standard mobile UI components such as contextual drawers, spinners, and multi-tab selectors. We paired them with swipe gestures and large hit states to create a tool that could be operated safely, intuitively, and with a limited time commitment. This behavior, paired with a sticky UI, meant that a freight carrier could quickly and efficiently dive in and out of critical tasks.

The final deliverable consisted of a Sketch file containing 390+ Android and iOS screens in light and dark themes. We also defined a typography and color system and built 250+ components with nested symbols and layer styles. These efforts not only allowed us to iterate on the design throughout the project efficiently, but they supported ongoing updates and empowered the internal team at DAT.
